Our Kaupapa

Transition 1 Process

We aim to empower our leaders to create leaders. Our tuakana-teina approach enables key leadership principles. We implement this closely with a buddy system ensuring an inclusive environment. Tuakana mentors also take on an important transition into greater leadership roles, gaining more responsibility. We believe that our school leader's experience in High School helps bring reality to our Year 8 students. This is where our fundamental teachings in TRF are applied and students gain a foundation of support and whanaungatanga. Each year we work with Pukekohe Intermediate School, Pukekohe North School, Opaheke School and Conifer Grove School to provide Year 8 students with a Transition camp.

The transition from Intermediate learning to Secondary learning can be one of the most jarring and overwhelming rites of passage that children face. They are navigating puberty, relationships and greater academic expectation while attempting to integrate into a very new environment. Transition 1 provides Year 8 students with a thorough preparation for High School and a ready-made future friendship group. Preparatory sessions in their school and the Transition camp, give them the best possible support on this important leg of their academic journey.

Core Programme

Our Core programme enables us to walk alongside the young people referred to us during their entire High School career. Providing a safe pro-social in-school family and a space where they can hang out, grow and learn to be their best selves. The adolescent years contain some of the most volatile and decisive moments in our lives. We provide life skills, leadership training, mentorship and peer support during this vital period.

The Gem Journey is a comprehensive intervention that uses vivid storytelling as the medium to deliver vital lessons in emotional wellbeing. Our Year 9 and 10 students go through this experience that enables them to reflect deeply on a broad range of important themes. They gain a working framework for healthy decision-making, safe and respectful relationships and identity acquisition. Built of 30 years of research and service delivery by expert family therapist Ron Phillips.

As part of our initiative to prepare our young people for adult life, we encourage them to organise social enterprise events to raise funds for camps and other goals they set. They learn how to plan and budget for their events, they learn about profit/loss and the benefits of advertising and evaluating after the event. These small adventures into the world of business are excellent object lessons in how to enter a market, turn a profit and build wealth towards an outcome.
